The daily mirror terrorism notes

The Daily Mirror: Terrorism
Image 1:
*      Frightening image of a terrorist wearing a balaclava
*      Pointing the knife to the reader as if to say no one is safe and anyone could be attacked
*      Jihadi John – alliteration – weird as the terrorists are English and white “a brit undergrad”
*      Readers are almost obligated to feel sympathy for the daughter as she has lost her father in a vile and inhumane circumstance
*      Her plea is almost like she is begging for someone to do something enhancing the sympathy
*      The nation is now being divided
*      Is patriarchy breaking?

Image 2:
*      Similar as image 1 as we see a young girl struggling due to terrorism in the UK
*      A feeling of unity is also created as the police help the girl
*      No mention of the actual terrorist but just the victims
*      The young girl may cause readers to feel sympathy
*      Why is ‘suicide bomb’ in inverted commas?
*      Terrorism is ruining the lives of youths

Image 3:
*      Numerous subheadings regarding terrorism allowing readers to realise how terrorists are killing people everywhere
*      The headline always reveals how many people have died to allow readers to comprehend the monstrosity

Image 4:
*      Gory image of the blood from Drummer Lee Rigby – Readers are likely to be horrified by this
*      The terrorist isn’t wearing a balaclava
*      Sympathy is created as the victim is a soldier
*      The victim is hardly addressed and the focus is mainly on the terrorist
*      “On a British street” –the terrorist has no place on a British street – Glorifying Britain?
*      “The evil face of terror”- the face doesn’t really seem that evil but underlines his malicious acts

ALL IMAGES
*      May engender readers to feel frightened for themselves and their country
*      May allow the reader to understand that the government are not doing enough to stop terrorism
*      May enrage readers and cause the establishment of groups such as the English Defence League (EDL) – this may cause islamophobia – cumulative effect
*      Often overwhelms the readers and possibly urges them not to read the magazine (reverse effect?) – cumulative effect
*      Hardly any of the terrorists are named
